Sometimes It's Not About The Final Destination It's About The Journey

Dover and Canterbury Day Trip

During our recent Mother-Daughter trip to London, we booked a day trip to Dover & Canterbury. I’ll skip to the end conclusion: it was worthwhile and you should definitely find the time to drive to these astonishing sites. It was my first time there but it certainly won’t be the last.

Proper preparation you should consider

If its summer: water, hats, sunscreen and eyeglasses. The radiation is high on the cliffs.

If its winter: just enjoy the walk.

It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is you will love the white cliffs of Dover and its’ castle. You should bring a picnic basket as the scenery will just force you to get romantic with fruits, wine and cheese or anything else you like to eat while sitting in the middle of the lawns.

Things You Should See if You Have 2.5h in Canterbury

Enjoy walking in the city, as it is full of historical sites that have been preserved in good condition. Every site has its own story, so you will get your chance to hear stories of Thomas Becket, King Henry II, and even Christopher Marlowe. The high street has a lot of beautiful boutique shops, bakeries and coffee shops with divine coffee and delicious food. You can defiantly spend hours wandering around this colorful iconic town.

Another great idea which will only take up around 50 min of your time is the brilliant Canterbury Historic River Tours. You can leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind for a while, as your guide rows down the river. In these tours, you can enjoy not only the "Wind in the Willows" but also get a detailed history review by your guide that is a history student at Canterbury University. You will pay only if you were satisfied with the boat trip.

The price for an adult is 11£.

The White Cliffs of Dover & Dover Castle

A short drive out of Canterbury and you will arrive at the city of Dover.

You should plan your visit according to your time schedule. There is a lot to see, and you might not see it all in one day.

In case you have more than 4.5 hours to spend you should consider visiting Dover Castle.

The castle has been through a few transformations over the years. Start with the Romans that build a lighthouse to guide ships into the harbour, continue under the supervising of Henry III when the castle completed. During the wars it has been under military use, while today the castle is transferred to the Ministry of Works for preservation as an Ancient Monument.

In case you have less than 4 hours, skip the castle and walk straight towards the well known white cliffs.

First, you will get to see one of the busiest port in the world, on a good day you will also see the costs of France.

The rout is absolutely gorgeous. At the end of the rout, there is a lighthouse. It takes 50 minutes to get to the lighthouse and 50 minutes to return. If you wish to take it easy, bring that picnic basket that I’ve mentioned earlier in the post. What can be better than enjoying delicious food while observing a stunning view?

I wanted to get to the lighthouse and climb to the top. But to be honest, what actually happened was that 45 minutes after we started walking my 7 years old said that she is tired. We set down, drank water and enjoyed the view. I knew that even if we will get to the lighthouse eventually, it will only increase the chance that I will have to carry her back. So, we left and walked our 45 minutes back. The amazing thing is it was still worth it.
